Columbus Avenue was a station on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad main line, now the Northeast Corridor. It was served by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. It also served the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway from 1912 to 1937.

History[edit]

The station opened in 1912, as part of the opening of the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway.

Columbus Avenue station was located about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) to the east from Mount Vernon East station at Columbus Avenue. It was a transfer point to the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway – one of five NYW&B stations within the city. [1] The station building was destroyed by a fire on March 31, 1957, though trains continued to stop.[2]

The Columbus Avenue station in Mount Vernon, New York was closed in the Penn Central era, or on December 20, 1972, due to its proximity to Mount Vernon station and the expense of converting it to high-level platforms.[citation needed] The station was then demolished and replaced by Mount Vernon East station.[3]
