Cometary Outburst

A cometary outburst (sometimes informally referred to as a cometary eruption) is a sudden release of gas and dust from a comet, which can cause a rapid increase in a comet's brightness. The flare-up in brightness typically being of 2-3 magnitudes, though an increase of 5 magnitudes is possible, although less common.[2][3][4] The most famous cometary outburst is that of 17P/Holmes, starting on October 23, 2007, which displayed a brightness increase of 15 magnitudes. Going from a visual magnitude of 17 to a visual magnitude of about magnitude 2.5 over the course of two days, making it the largest cometary outburst ever seen at the time.[5]
