commercetools is an international software company which builds a cloud-based.[1], headless ecommerce platform for Enterprise-level customers[2][3]. The company is headquartered in Munich and is running offices in Europe, Asia, and in the United States.
History[edit]
commercetools was started by Dirk Hoerig and Denis Werner in 2006. They built an API-first commerce platform which separates frontend and backend to give more flexibility to brands and retailers. The company was initially financed by the investors Astutia, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Bayern Kapital, BayBG, and Wecken & Cie[4].
In September 2014, REWE digital, a wholly-owned subsidiary of REWE Group, acquired commercetools to drive its online grocery strategy, with APIs and the microservice approach playing a key role for their digital platform[5][6].
In May 2015, an American subsidiary was founded in Durham. In 2018, commercetools invested $17M to support international expansion[7][8]. They launched an office in Amsterdam[9] in 2018, followed by a London office[10][11] as well as a Singapore office in 2019[12].
Awards and Milestones[edit]
In the The Forrester Wave™: B2C Commerce Suites, Q1 2017[13], Forrester recognizes commercetools as a “Contender". This status was maintained in the following year, in the The Forrester Wave™: B2C Commerce Suites, Q3 2018[14]. In the autumn of 2018, commercetools was named a “A Major Player” by IDC in the 2018 IDC MarketScape for B2C Digital Commerce[15] Gartner included commercetools in its Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce in August 2019, ranking the company as “Visionary” for the second consecutive year[16]. Overall, analysts highlighted the microservices capability of the commercetools platform, a concept which was discussed in detail by Kelly Goetsch[17].
Partners and Customers[edit]
commercetools has built an international network of partnerships with service providers such as BloomReach[18] as well as system integrators like EPAM and Valtech. With this ecosystem, commercetools serves international customers such as premium car manufacturer AUDI[19], fashion retailer EXPRESS[20], and high-end audio equipment company Bang & Olufsen[21][22] .
