Commercial Medicine Stores Limited was a retail pharmacy establishment registered and operated in Lagos, Nigeria from the period 1950 to 2012. The company was started by Robert Olatunji Adebowale and r Solomon Tanimomo Hunponu-Wusu.

History[edit]

Commercial Medicine Stores Limited started as a partnership venture between two Lagos pharmacists, Robert O. Adebowale and Solomon T. Hunponu-Wusu. They worked together as pharmacists with the West African Drugs Company Limited (a British subsidiary) in the 1940’s. They decided to leave and establish a pharmacy company to be called Commercial Medicine Stores. It was a partnership venture and not a limited liability company initially. The company made giant progress and became a registered limited liability company. Two of their friends, O.Onayemi and Dr. (Mrs) A.Awoliyi were invited as share-owners and made non-executive directors of the company. A fifth shareowner/director, Chief A.I. Kinoshi was later appointed in 1983. The executive chairman of the company was S.T. Humponu-Wusu. R.O. Adebowale's commitment to the company was total and his life activities were centered around the company. His name was synonymous with the company and the pharmacies were sometimes referred to as "Adebowale medicine stores.". R.O Adebowale was also an optician who introduced optical services into the retail component of the business .

Robert O. Adebowale (1910-1987)[edit]

Robert O. Adebowale was born into the Adebowale family of Ijebu-ode, Nigeria on March 10th, 1910. Hee attended Ijebu-Ode Grammar School from 1921 to 1927. he then attended St. Gregory's College, Lagos to complete his secondary education from 1921 to 1933, and then proceeded to the Pharmacy School, Saba, Lagos, Nigeria, where he qualified as a Chemist and Druggist (now referred to as Pharmacists). Around 1944 to 1947, he went to London and qualified as an optician. . He was a founding father, shareholder/ Chief Managing Director of the firm for 37 years. He also served as National Treasurer of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria from 1955 to 1965. He was made a Fellows of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. He was also the founder and Managing Director of Robert Properties Limited and Fulani Properties, Limited, real estate businesses in Lagos. He was the president of the Nigerian Optometric Association from 1968 to 1976. He died on April 14, 1987. https://noang.org/leadership/

Solomon T. Hunponu-Wusu (1900-1977)[edit]

Solomon Tanimomo Hunponu-Wusu was born into the Hunponu-Wusu family of Badagry on June 28th, 1900. S.T Hunponu-Wusu attended the Saint Thomas School Badagry from 1905 to 1908 and Tinubu Methodist School Lagos from 1908 to 1918. He later proceeded to the School of Pharmacy and qualified as a Chemist and Druggist in 1924. He started his work life at the West African Drug Company Ltd as a Pharmacist. He served the company for 26 years and was the first Nigerian to be made the General Manager of the Company. He left the company in 1950 to start the Commercial Medicine Stores Ltd, with R.O Adebowale in a joint partnership. He was made a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (F.P.S.N) in 1975. Devolution to Second Generation Pharmacists[edit]

After the death of the founding fathers, Robert Adebowale and Solomon Hunponu-Wusu, the mantle of operation of thecompanu was passed on to the children who inherited their parent's shares and were also made share owners/directors of the company. The second generation share owners/directors were: David. B. Hunponu-Wusu (a pharmacist who was appointed Chairman/ Managing Director), and . Onayemi-Adebutu (non-executive director), S.O. Awoliyi (non-executive director), Dr. Abimbola Adebowale (a pharmacist and director), and O. Kinoshi (non-executive director). By this transfer to the second generation, the company succeeded in giving 62 years (1950-2012) of continued community pharmacy service to the people of the city of Nigeria.

Professional Honors[edit]

The two founding fathers of the company Robert Adebowale and Solomon Hunponu-Wusu were in their lifetime honored with the highest professional award of Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, FPSN. The successor Chairman/Managing Director, David. B. Hunponu-Wusu was also honored with the professional award of the Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, FPSN, in 1992.

Company Brand Products[edit]

a) Omorela Baby Mixture: Omorela Baby Mixture was a formula incorporating chloroquine and paracetamol as the main active ingredients. It soon becomes a house-hold name for teething and feverish problem in babies and children. It was patented and manufactured for Commercial Medicine Stores Limited by a company in Ireland. The sale of Omorela Baby Mixture contributed a significant amount income to the fortune of the company. b) Commercial Pile Mixture was a formula used for the management of piles and compounded in the pharmacy. c) Chenopodium Mixture was used as a worm expeller and was also compounded in the pharmacy.

Corporate Operations[edit]

The Corporate Bodies that Commercial Medicine Stores , Limited, served included Cappa and D'albarto PLC, construction workforce, the Anglican Communion Cathedral Priests, Private Doctors Hospitals and Clinics, Banks, and many others.

Participation in Government Businesses[edit]

The company participated in a major supply of Drugs during the Petroleum Trust fund. (PTF) to 24 of the 36 States in the country. The company was a registered service-provider of drugs to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and to many Federal and State Government Hospitals by supply tenders.
