Community Fridge Sunflower
Community Fridge Sunflower (Community Fridge Himawari, コミュニティフリッジひまわり) is a community fridge in Fukushima, Japan.
It is managed under the theme of “otagaisama” that means helping each other in times of need.[1].
Background
Originally, community fridges have spread in Western countries, and they are needed in Japan as well due to deteriorating economic conditions during the coronavirus pandemic and rising prices. In Japan, the first community fridge was opened in Okayama prefecture[2], and other community fridges have opened in various regions including Fukushima.
History
On February 3, 2022, Community Fridge Sunflower opened in a room in an apartment in Fukushima city[3].
After that, the location has moved to another town in the city with cooperation from a local supermarket.
In September 2022, the number of users was about 60 households[4].
In October 2022, the number was about 80 households[5].
After the rising prices in Japan, the stored foods are decreasing quickly, so the immediate problem is securing a stable food supply[5].
System
The apartment type was the first in Japan[6]
A room in an apartment has a fridge, freezer, and shelves to store donated foods.
The user can open the door with a smartphone.
Information about finding employment and various consultations is provided in the room.
There is a message board in the room, so users leave a message each time they use it. This message is introduced on the official Facebook page.
