Compass Box Killer
Compass Box Killer is the first installment of the Inspector Virkar crime series written by filmmaker-author Piyush Jha.
Plot Summary[edit]
When a senior police official is found murdered at his desk, Inspector Virkar, the protagonist, is given the charge to investigate it. While probing through the case, Virkar comes across a mysterious note which spills out of a student's compass box. What follows then is a series of killings where a compass box reveals further clues.
In his cat and mouse chase with the killer, the Inspector is accompanied by the attractive and ambitious journalist Raashi Hunerwal. In order to track down the ruthless murderer and his next move, Virkar's search takes him from Mumbai to Khandala to Belgaum and in the process he discovers comes across some startling facts which further reveal the killer's ulterior motives.
Reception[edit]
Compass Box Killer was positively received by critics.
Yatin Gupta from Network18 called the book a cracker of a thriller and said, “A lot of running around, sleepless nights, too much brainstorming, love, betrayal, logical inferences and figuring out who is the killer, everything about this book by Piyush Jha is just perfect. Everything makes sense and this is what makes the book completely un-put-down-able.”[1]
Sapna Sarfare from The Punekar said,“There are thick books to beat someone with and there are paper thin ones to fan oneself. Compass Box Killer is the compact kind. It is just fit for travelling around with and finishing in one go. Best of all, it gives you enough fodder to use your imagination and create the scenes before your eyes. From the very first scene where the killer gets his first prey, Jha keeps the fast pace intact.”[2]
