Conor McMahon is an Irish horror film director and editor from Dublin. Conor started making horror short films as a teenager, winning ‘Ireland's Young Filmmaker of the Year’ at Fresh International Film Festival in 1996 and later coming second place in 1997 with his trilogy of short horror films, including one called ‘Maniac’.[1]
Conor attended Dun Laoghaire National Film School between 1998 – 2001, where he specialised in directing and editing. He’s made numerous short films, music videos and documentaries.[2] His short film The Braineater (2001) won ‘Best Film’ at the Sitges Film Festival.[3]
Career
Conor first began as an editor, starting with a 50 minute documentary. He also made filmmaking tutorial videos for Fresh International Film Festival.[4] He released his first feature film Dead Meat in 2004, with aid from Screen Ireland.[5] While the film received mostly negative reviews, though Screen Anarchy also stated they felt McMahon had potential, despite the film being “poorly put together”.[6] Fangoria would later refer to Conor as being one of the first Irish filmmakers to make “indigenous-made Irish horror”.[7]
The Irish filmmaker would release a few more, albeit, less notable works between 2008-2010, including The Disturbed (2009), Dublin 26.06.08 (2008) and his first television series Zombie Bashers (2010) alongside RTE.[8]
In 2012, he released his most famous film to date, Stitches, a slasher film that follows a clown (played by Ross Noble) who rises from the dead to take revenge on the teenagers responsible for his death at a birthday party years prior.[9][10] The film received positive reviews from the likes of The Guardian[11] and won the ‘Best Kill Award’ at that years Fright-Fest. A few years later he directed the horror feature From The Dark (2014).[12]
In 2021, Conor directed the vampire comedy thriller Let the Wrong one In (named as a rib of the film Let the right one in), which was released by Wildcard Distribution[13] and starring Anthony Head.[14] The horror flick earned McMahon two nominations at the Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTAS).[15]
