Construction site hoarding

  • Comment: This is nearly there, but we tend to shy away from the "you" word, and there are a couple of examples in the draft: Template:Tq is only for quoting in talk and project pages. Do not use it in actual articles.. So a bit more formalisation please. ChrysGalley (talk) 10:14, 22 August 2026 (UTC)

Construction site hoarding, also known as site hoarding or construction hoarding, is a temporary wall put up around a place where people are building, tearing down or fixing up a large building. People use construction hoarding to keep people out who should not be there to keep the building work away from the public and to make a clear line around the work area.[1]

Common site hoardings can be made of long sheets like wood structures with plywood on the front. Because the wind and other heavy loads hit them construction hoarding is treated as a structure. This means construction hoarding might need a design based on how tall it is, where it sits the ground underneath and how long it will stay there.[2]

Besides keeping things safe and secure construction hoarding can also show project details, ads, pictures or art for the public. Some city planners even use how construction hoarding looks as a way to make the local area look better.[3]

Purpose and use

One of the main jobs of construction hoarding is to make a safe border between a building site and the public. The Health and Safety Executive says that building sites need ways to control who comes in and to keep people out who are not supposed to be. The kind of barrier used depends on things like the type of work what is around the site how many people live nearby and if people are likely to walk to the site.[1]

Construction hoarding can also help keep people walking or driving away from the building work and hide the messy site from the street. RICS says the main job is to make a border but they also note that the flat surfaces can be used for ads, news or art.[3]

Unlike fences that you can see through regular construction hoarding often uses solid sheets attached to posts. Using wood and plywood is a common way to make construction hoarding as seen in engineering guides.[3]

Structural design

Even though construction hoarding is only there for a short time the design has to handle a lot of weight and pressure. The Temporary Works Forum says that construction hoarding can be quite tall and can take a lot of force. Wind is a deal for the design because the solid surface of the construction hoarding can catch the wind and push hard against it.[4]

When designing construction hoarding people look at how long it will be there the buildings nearby the wind, the ground, the base and how to hold it up. The Temporary Works Forum says that if the design is hard you need an expert to do it and someone else should check the work.[4]

The Health and Safety Executive also says that the fence or construction hoarding should be kept in good shape the whole time and that site security should be checked often.[1]

Graphics, advertising and public art

Because construction hoarding has such a large flat surface people use it to show pictures and words. Graphics can show the name of a building tell people what is happening or act as an ad. Construction hoarding has also been used to show art or things made for the community.[3]

RICS has seen cases where construction hoarding and covers were treated as part of the neighborhood instead of just being walls. This includes art made for the site pictures of what the new building will look like or even hoarding with plants on it.[3]

Some cities even make this a rule for buildings. For example the Urban Redevelopment Authority in Singapore asks for creative construction hoarding for projects. They say using art on construction hoarding helps make the sidewalks and public areas look nicer.[5]

History

Construction hoarding has been used in cities for a very long time. In a 2014 article for ICON Magazine writer Crystal Bennes found that construction hoarding in London has been around since least 1928. In the past these boards might have shown ads that had nothing to do with the building work happening behind them.[6]

As ways of selling buildings changed construction hoarding started to look like the project itself. Now it often uses pictures of the building the project name and other brand info.[6][3]

Regulation and safety

The rules for construction hoarding change depending on where you're what kind of work is being done. In the United Kingdom the Health and Safety Executive says that site borders must be clear and that builders must try their best to keep people out. In areas it is good to use a fence or construction hoarding around the site.[1]

City rules can also say how construction hoarding should look. These rules might ask for art, plants or specific info especially if the site is next, to a place where people walk.[3][5]
