Cookie Run: OvenBreak (Hangul: 쿠키런: 오븐브레이크; RR Kukileon: Obeunbeuleikeu) (also known as OvenBreak) is an online mobile endless running game developed by Devsisters for Android and iOS. After being officially released on 12 June 2009,[1] named OvenBreak, it was ranked #1 in the "Top Free Apps" on the iOS App Store in major countries such as the United States, and Canada in 2010.[2]

The story of this game is set in a world of sentient gingerbread made from an evil witch inspired by the classic folktale The Gingerbread Man. The mechanic of the game is that the cookies are running throughout an endless map to earn money and points, sliding and jumping to avoid an obstacle.

Series Timeline

OvenBreak

The first-ever game in this series is named “Ovenbreak”. It was released on 12 June 2009 by Devsisters.[1] After being released, it was changed to “OvenBreak Infinity” in September 2009.[3] In late 2010, OvenBreak Infinity obtained ranked #1 in the “Top Free App” on the iOS App Store in major countries such as the United States, Canada, Singapore.[2] In December 2012, Devsisters updated the big patch and renamed it to be “Ovenbreak 2”.[4]

Cookie Run for Kakao

Cookie Run for Kakao was released on 2 April 2013.[5] In late 2013, Cookie Run for Kakao received a Korean game award in the game character category. In May 2014, The number of downloads reached 20 million times.[6]

After being successful in OvenBreak, Devsisters released a new game titled “Cookie Run for Kakao” - A popular social media platform used to communicate in Korea, quite like LINE, Messenger, Whatsapp. A difference between this version and the OvenBreak version is that Devsisters decided to collaborate with Kakao because they can link the game profile to the Kakao profile of the players. Therefore, the game profile will be saved with the Kakao profile. Players can log in to their game profile on any phone, unlike the old version that the data will be saved only on one phone. On the other hand, the new version, Cookie run for Kakao, must have the internet connected to a phone to play.

LINE Cookie Run

LINE Cookie Run was released worldwide on 23 January 2014.[7] Within a month, it reached #1 in the “Top Free Apps” on the iOS App Store mostly in Asia countries such as Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao. In April 2015, it reached 50 million downloads, the most downloaded series of this game ever since Devsisters has released OvenBreak.[6] Until June 2018, LINE Cookie Run shut down with the most downloaded game of Devsisters ever until nowadays, 70 million times.[7]

After Devsisters succeeded in the Cookie Run for Kakao, mostly in Korea, they released a new one titled “LINE Cookie Run” to be more popular worldwide. Because Kakao is generally used in Korea, the last version, Cookie Run for Kakao, might not be ubiquitous in the countries that did not use Kakao mainly. A difference between the new version and the last version is that LINE Cookie Run links the game profile to LINE instead of Kakao. The other features of the game including Cookies, Gameplay, Pets, are the same.

Cookie Run: OvenBreak

Devsisters released Cookie Run: OvenBreak on 27 October 2016, except for China.[8] Within only ten days, it reached 2 million downloads and 5 million downloads within a month. In December 2017, Cookie Run: OvenBreak was selected to be the game of the year by the iOS Apple App Store in Thailand, Taiwan, Korea. In 2021, the number of downloads is 37 million times.[6]

In the last two versions, Cookie Run for Kakao and LINE Cookie Run, the same thing is that both are linked the game profile to their social media, Kakao , and LINE. So, Devsisters decided to make their account link with the game profile. This is the main difference between this version, Cookie Run: OvenBreak, and the last two versions. There are some other differences such as the number of Cookies, more Gameplay, etc.

Developer

Devsisters Corporation (Korean: 데브시스터즈, romanized: 데브시스터즈 주식회사) is the developer of Cookie Run in all versions. It is a South Korean company focusing on developing a mobile application, especially a mobile game application, founded in May 2007.[6] The founder of Devsisters is Ji-Hoon Lee and Jong-Heon Kim.[11]

The company was founded with the first name, Extra Standard, on 30 May 2007. In 2009, they changed the title to "Mobilier Corporation". In late 2009, they renamed again to "Devsisters"; However, this name was officially used in March 2010.[11] We can say that Devsisters is one the companies that quickly focus on iPhone applications. From CEO quote, Ji-Hoon Lee, "PC-online games were at the center of attention for about 10 years, but now we're witnessing a massive change in how entertainment content is distributed and consumed through open markets like iTunes, Facebook, Mixi, and Nate (Cyworld)".[12] This shows that Devsisters focused to develop other new technologies instead of computer games. Since then, they released many games based on iPhone and iPod Touch including OvenBreak.

After they are successful in OvenBreak, and OvenBreak 2. In 2013, Devsisters joined to be a partner with Kakao releasing Cookie Run for Kakao. With being a new social media platform that the Koreans were interested in because Kakao was a kind of new thing at that time, Cookie Run for Kakao was so popular that not only in Korea but also worldwide.[13]

In 2014, Devsisters focused a lot on Cookie Run more than another thing due to popularity. What they thought was that Cookie Run for Kakao was good, but it was just mostly popular in Korea. They started to cooperate with LINE. According to the fact that LINE was the highest-grossing nongaming app for all of 2013 in the world. So, this was a great opportunity for Devsisters to achieve what they want. They released LINE Cookie Run in January 2014. This was the best game they have ever made. They received many awards from LINE Cookie Run. In 2016, Devsisters released the latest version of Cookie Run, titled Cookie Run: OvenBreak.[13]
