The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (Department of Sustainable Development) is a research and teaching department at the Faculty of Geosciences of Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The institute conducts interdisciplinary research on environmental change, energy and resource use, innovation, governance and societal transformations related to sustainability.
History
The Copernicus Institute was established in 2001 by bringing together environmental science, policy, innovation and energy-related research at Utrecht University. Its creation reflected the development of sustainable development as an interdisciplinary field involving both the natural and social sciences.
Research
The institute is characterised by multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and more recently transdisciplinary approaches.
The institute's researchers have contributed to international scientific assessments, including work associated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
The institute’s researchers have also taken on prominent roles at the interface between science and public policy. Jacqueline Cramer, emeritus professor of sustainable innovation, served as the Dutch Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment from 2007 to 2010 and has played an active role in advancing the circular economy in the Netherlands[1]. In 2023, professor of sustainability transitions Marko Hekkert was appointed director of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, a Dutch government institute that conducts research and advises policymakers on environmental and spatial-planning issues.[2][3]
Education
Education is one of the institute’s main activities. Members of its academic staff develop, coordinate and teach courses in two Bachelor’s and five Master’s programmes at Utrecht University.
Bachelors
BSc in Global Sustainability Science
Global Sustainability Science is an internationally-oriented English-language Bachelor of Science programme examining sustainability challenges through the natural and social sciences.[4]
Science and Innovation Management (Natuurwetenschap en Innovatiemanagement)
Science and Innovation Management (Natuurwetenschap en innovatiemanagement), a Dutch-language programme focusing on the development, organisation and societal application of scientific and technological innovation.[5]
Masters
MSc in Sustainable Development
Sustainable Development is a two-year programme designed for students who want to contribute to developing solutions needed for a transformation to more sustainable and equitable societies. There are four different tracks.[6] [7]

- Environmental Change and Ecosystems
MSc in Sustainable Business & Innovation
Sustainable Business and Innovation examines how organisations can assess, develop and implement sustainability innovations, drawing on subjects such as life-cycle assessment, cleaner production, environmental management and organisational change.[8]
MSc in Energy Science
Energy Science provides an interdisciplinary understanding of energy systems and the transition towards more sustainable energy production and use.[9]
MSc in Innovation Sciences
Innovation Sciences studies how new ideas and technologies develop into innovations and how innovation processes can be managed and supported within companies and wider society.[10]
MSc in Water Management for Climate Adaptation
Water Management for Climate Adaptation combines the study of natural and human water systems with data analysis, engineering and nature-based solutions, water management, climate policy and governance.[11]
International interdisciplinary education
Institute staff have also contributed to the CHARM-EU Master’s programme Global Challenges for Sustainability, which is offered through a European university alliance. The programme combines challenge-based learning with mobility and collaboration between students and staff from several European universities.[12][13]
Study Associations
STORM is the Study Association for the bachelor Global Sustainability Science and the master programmes Sustainable Development and Water Management for Climate Adaptation.[14]
NWSV Helix is the study association of the bachelor programme Science and Innovation Management and the master programmes Innovation Sciences and Sustainable Business and Innovation.[15]
NRG is the association of students studying the master programme in Energy Science.[16]
Selected contributions and recognition
Researchers from the institute have received several major scientific awards. In 2024, Detlef van Vuuren, professor of integrated assessment modelling, received the Spinoza Prize for his research on climate, energy and environmental scenarios.[17][18] In the same year, Frank Biermann, professor of global sustainability governance, received the Volvo Environment Prize for his work on global environmental governance, becoming the first political scientist to receive the award.[19]
Van Vuuren and Ernst Worrell, professor of energy, resources & technological change, have also contributed to reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The IPCC, together with Al Gore, was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for its work to develop and disseminate knowledge about human-induced climate change. Worrell and Van Vuuren were among the authors who received an IPCC certificate recognising their contribution to the reports associated with the award[20].
In 2026, Van Vuuren was named the climate scientist most highly cited by the IPCC[21]
