"Coquette" is an Internet aesthetic that revolves around a hyper-feminine fashion style encompassing playful and alluring elements. It typically correlates with light pink and dark red visuals and/or objects. Coquette is also commonly associated with the style of famous singer Lana Del Rey.

History[edit]

While the "Coquette" aesthetic is currently popular on the photo sharing website Pinterest, it is believed to have originated on the microblogging site Tumblr during the mid- 2010s.[1] The origin of the term "Coquette" is from the French word for "flirtatious", as flirtatiousness is oftentimes associated with the aesthetic.

Aesthetic[edit]

Coquette will oftentimes depict ornate trinkets, vintage floral patterns, ruffles, lace details, flowy dresses, white pearl necklaces, dark red lipstick, dark red objects, light pink feminine clothing, and most prominently, light pink ribbons. The "Coquette" aesthetic seems to have encouraged an online trend in which people will add light pink ribbons to commonplace objects to humorously insinuate an act of femininity. In less superficial terms, Coquette seems to attempt to convey girlhood and the experience of being feminine.
