Cori Doerrfeld is an American Author and Illustrator best known for her work in child literature. With books like the New York Times bestselling book The Little Rabbit, Doerrfeld has written and illustrated many works including collaborations with Brooke Shields, It's the Best Day Ever, Dad! and Welcome to Your World, Baby.
Early life/Education
Born/Raised/Lives
During her childhood, Cori Doerrfeld loved to draw, especially animals including cats, horses, and dogs. Her passion for the arts grew as she took an interest in animation. She expresses how the creative style “literally brings art to life.”[1] Doerrfeld would use her favorite TV characters as references and replicate the show frame by frame.[1][2] Some of her favorite animators include Chuck Jones and Bill Peet.[2] She has always enjoyed writing even from a young age. To the point she has “folders upon folders of stories I wrote throughout [her] school years.”[2] Doerrfeld started her career illustrating a book series written by Brooke Shields, It's the Best Day Ever, Dad! and Welcome to Your World, Baby, while juggling being a first-time full-time mom.[2] She has since helped create books with national and local publishers. She currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her spouse, Tyler Page who is a comic book artist, and two children, their daughter Charlie and son Leo.[3]
In an interview with Read Brightly[1], Doerrfeld explains neither of her parents enjoyed art. She enjoys drawing emotions and expressions on characters, typically animals.[2] Cori Doerrfeld states that the advantages of both writing and illustrating your own work is that you can control the vision. She likes having a say in what the visuals should be.[2]
Education
During here higher education, Cori Doerrfeld attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art.[3] She, from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, Minnesota, obtained her postbaccalaureate in illustration.[3][4]
Career
Beneath
On January 17, 2023, Doerrfeld released Beneath. Beneath was inspired by Doerrfelds grandfather. From the grandpa’s attire in the book like his blue top and green pants.[5]
Goodbye, Friend! Hello, Friend!
Published on July 2, 2019, Cori Doerrfeld shares her personal experience making friends as an adult and watching her children make friends in Goodbye, Friend! Hello, Friend! Doerrfeld a tribute this book to moving to a new city, new school, or new state and the power that comes with being open to opportunities that lead to new friendships.[2] Different from her other books, Goodbye, Friend! Hello, Friend! depicts human characters and takes place in the real world. The book is meant to be realistic and capture “real friendship”[2] Through this book, Doerrfeld hopes that it “connects with people on an emotional level, and ... hope[s] people see themselves in the pages.”[2] Characters, like Stella and Charlie, are names of her daughter and her friend. Georges, the pet dog, comes from the name Doerfelds friend's dog. While the names on the cubbies are names from Doerrfeld's personal life.[2] All adding a layer of personal touches from Doerrfeld's life.
The Rabbit Listened
The Rabbit Listened was released February 20, 2018 and became one of Deorrfelds most popular book. It is a story about grief and loss written and illustrated by Cori Doerrfeld. In an interview, Doerrfeld motions that her favorite page to draw from this book was the scene in which birds knock down a tower of blocks. Due to its challenging nature and Varity of color, this specific page was enjoyable to create for her.[1] When discussing releasing two books a year apart, Doerrfeld touches on her feelings towards “The Rabbit Listened” garnering more attention than her previous works. She states, “I have at times felt that The Rabbit Listened suddenly defined who I am as an author/illustrator and set up expectations for what my previous and upcoming books would be like.”[2] Doerrfeld continues by expressing how she feels humbled and honored by the book's attention.[2] The Rabbit Listened became a Notable Children’s Book of 2018 by The New York Times.[2]
Maggie and Wendel
Cori Doerrfeld is the author and illustrator for Maggie and Wendel released in 2016.[6] She based this book on her two children.[1] When asked “Which characters from your books would you like to spend time with?” Doerrfeld responds that the answer to that question would be Maggie and Wendel as they represent her children and would like to spend time with them.[1]
Little Bunny Foo Foo: The Real Story
Released in 2012, Little Bunny Foo Foo was authored and illustrated by Cori Doerrfeld.[6] When asked “Which characters from your books would you like to spend time with?” She also mentioned that “hanging out with Bunny Foo Foo sounds like a pretty good time” as she likes to take walks, typically with her dog, and baked goods, such as donuts.[1]
While writing books, Cori Doerrfeld teaches at young artists' conventions around Minnesota. She views art as a “safe, yet powerful way for kids to explore what they think is important and develop their own inner voice.”[1] That it is not only an outlet to escape but to create.
