Cormac Hayes, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a fictional character from the medical drama television series Grey's Anatomy, which airs on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in the United States. The character was created by Krista Vernoff and is portrayed by Richard Flood.

Cormac is introduced as the new Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital in the mid-season premiere of the sixteenth season, acting as the replacement for the recently departed Alex Karev. It is later revealed that Cormac was sent to Grey-Sloan by Cristina Yang, whom he worked with at his previous hospital in Switzerland, as a potential new love interest for Meredith Grey. He is the single father of two sons, Liam and Austin, due to his late wife's passing from cancer.

Background[edit]

As a child, Cormac was raised in Ireland. Before coming to Grey-Sloan, Cormac was working as a pediatric surgeon at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research in Switzerland. A single father of two boys, Cormac fled to Switzerland with the kids as he mourned the death of his wife, Abigail, who had passed from cancer following years of unsuccessful treatment. Cormac and Abigail had met at a surgical conference in Los Angeles, where Abigail was working as a representative for a drug company. They got married and had two children before Abigail was diagnosed with, at the age of 33, a cancerous tumor in her uterus. Before she passed, she told Cormac that it was okay for him to fall in love again when she was gone.

Storylines[edit]

On his first day as Chief of Pediatric Surgery, Cormac interrupts Meredith, who is consulting on a case for Jamie Caldwell, a teenage girl who previously had a cholecystectomy. Meredith and Cormac butt heads over their treatment plans for Jamie, as Meredith believes there is just a gallstone that escaped during Jamie's previous surgery, while Cormac thinks Jamie has a malignant mass. Cormac goes behind Meredith's back to inform Jamie's mother of the possible cancer diagnosis, but he is corrected in the O.R. when Meredith shows Jamie's pain is, in fact, just due to a gallstone. Cormac is shown to be impressed by Meredith and later tells Meredith that they should learn to work together. As he leaves to go home, Meredith receives a text from Cristina, saying that Cristina sent Cormac to Meredith as a gift, nicknaming him "McWidow."

As Cormac begins working on more cases, including a vaping case and liver transplant, he and Meredith begin to get closer, bonding over the shared loss of their spouses. Meredith meets Cormac's sons, who are taking a tour of the hospital, and Cormac and Meredith share war stories about parenting. Cormac acknowledges that it's nice to find a fellow young widow to talk to and mentions to Meredith that Cristina has talked about her. Meredith and Cormac's friendship is deepened when Cormac witnesses Andrew being aggressive towards Meredith twice, with Cormac stepping in to defend Meredith the second time around. Jo Wilson notes that Cormac seems to care a lot about what Meredith thinks, prompting Cormac to later ask Meredith out for drinks. Meredith says she would love to but asks for a rain check.

In Season 17, Cormac is seen working on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, visibly exhausted and frustrated. In the season premiere, he discovers Meredith passed out in the parking lot and calls for help. It is revealed that Meredith has contracted COVID-19, and Cormac is shown to be checking in on Meredith periodically while he works on other cases.

Characterization[edit]

Cormac is initially characterized as impatient, easily agitated, and matter-of-fact, seen mostly through his interactions with Meredith. However, as he starts letting his guard down, he is shown to be kind and compassionate, having only behaved poorly because of his wife's two-year death anniversary. Because his wife's doctors didn't give him the full story before she died, Cormac makes sure to provide his patients with all the information they need, no matter how painful it might be.
