Sharon Reformed Church is a Reformed congregation in the town of Sharon, Schoharie County, New York, with its church building near the village of Sharon Springs. Organized in 1771 in the New Dorlach settlement, it is among the oldest congregations in Schoharie County. [Roscoe p. 264; Corwin p. 763] Long a congregation of the Reformed Church in America, it is today a member of the Alliance of Reformed Churches. [church website]
History. The congregation was organized in 1771 among the German settlers of the Dorlach Grant, an area whose name was locally pronounced "Turlah". [Roscoe pp. 255, 264] Corwin’s manual of the Reformed Church in America lists the church as "Sharon, (Dorlach,) Schoharie Co. N.Y. 1771?". [Corwin p. 763] For much of its early history the congregation shared pastors with the New Rhinebeck Reformed church (later the Reformed church of Lawyersville). [Roscoe p. 264] Early ministers recorded by Corwin include Christian Bork (1790s), Isaac Labagh (1801–1811), Nicholas Jones (1816–1820), and Henry A. Raymond (1829–1832 and 1856–1864). [Corwin pp. 232, 405, 419, 520, 763] In 1829 a portion of the membership seceded under Henry Bellinger to form the True Reformed Church of Sharon Hill, a division Roscoe attributes to disagreement over the doctrine of predestination. [Roscoe p. 279; Corwin p. 764] The church’s vital records have been published by the genealogist Lawrence V. Rickard. [Rickard]
Present day. The congregation worships at 6858 State Route 10 near Sharon Springs and is a member of the Alliance of Reformed Churches. [church website; ARC directory]
