Cornershop
Cornershop is a South African company that operates a delivery service in the South Africa. The company offers its services via a website and mobile app.
History[edit]
Cornershop is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was founded in 2020 by Monsi Chelemu. Cornershop was originally an on-demand grocery delivery service but expanded to delivering food and goods typically sold in megastores. The company began offering delivery services in Cape Town before moving into other cities, including Johannesburg, Durban, and Polokwane.
In 2020, Cornershop raised seed round funding. Also in 2021, Cornershop opened a new headquarters in Cape Town.
Service Model[edit]
Orders are fulfilled and delivered by a personal shopper, who picks, packs, and delivers the order —within 1 day. Customers pay with personal debit or credit cards. The delivery fee is R60 for orders of R350 or more and R100 under that amount. Cornershop offers a membership service called Plus for a monthly fee of about R99 or an annual fee of R899. The membership service waives delivery fees on orders over R350. Businesses participating in Cornershop's partnership program set the price of individual items on the platform, which are mostly the same prices as in-store. In addition, customers can pickup their pre-made orders from the store through a separate service. For stores that do not participate in Cornershop's partnership program, customers can be charged a markup of about 15% per order.
