Cornish New Zealanders
Cornish people left their homeland when tin and copper mining went into decline from the late 1800s. They have settled in countries all over the world ever since and continue to do so. There are many people in New Zealand who can trace their family back to those who emigrated for a new life. Some came to New Zealand for the same reasons and often the identical climates help ease new arrivals into their new life.
Many emigrants first went to Australia, then on to New Zealand, especially during the 1850s Gold Rush. South Island ports of Cornish arrivals 1860-1880s include Port Chalmers (Otago), Lyttleton for Christchurch (Canterbury), Hokitika (West Coast) and Nelson. The main ports for the North Island were Wellington, New Plymouth (Taranaki), Napier (East Coast), Auckland, with a few ships landing passengers at Thames (Waikato) and Hokianga in the North.
Present day
Today, there are three locations with prominent populations of Cornish New Zealanders and Cornish emigrants. Christchurch, Taranaki and the Hawkes Bay host regular meetups through the New Zealand Cornish Association. The association also maintains a well-stocked library of Cornish literature, in both Cornish and English language.
