Cosme Martins (born 1959) is an Afro-Brazilian artist known for producing figurative paintings involving oil on canvas and acrylic on canvas. His works have been displayed at leading galleries and museums, including Brazil's National Museum of Fine Arts[1], the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo Museum of Art, and the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art.[2][3]

Biography[edit]

Martins was born and raised in São Bento, Maranhão, Brazil. A self-taught artist, Martins began his artistic journey by depicting local figurative themes. In the 1980s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to expand his art's recognition. Guided by prominent Brazilian artists like Rubens Gerchman, Martins developed his own unique style that depicted abstract and figurative representations of every day life. For a significant period during his career, Martins depicted favelas, blending the images of people and structures into single abstract visualizations where shapes and objects blurred together. Cosme's unique painting style was termed a "new writing" by art critic Walmir Ayala[4] and his work has been featured in books like Emanoel Araújo's "The Afro-Brazilian's Hand."[5] Martins' distinctive style showcases a vivid color palette and terracotta textures crafted using his own undisclosed technique that prevents cracking.
