The company was founded in 2008 by George Wu under the name GoPlus in Ningbo, China, a furniture manufacturing hub located south of Shanghai.[2] The company was later rebranded to Costway in 2016. Currently, this online platform offers more than 8000 products, with over 10,000 factory partners and 20 warehouses globally. It has around 10 million customers. [3]

Costway also sells its products through online stores on major platforms such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart. Currently, the company operates in the U.S. and Canada. It also has offices in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Austria, Belgium, and Australia.

History[edit]

The company was founded by George Wu in 2008 under the name GoPlus[4], in Ningbo, China, a furniture manufacturing hub south of Shanghai.[5] Wu recognized the growing demand for furniture shopping online. In 2009, the company opened its office in California, and the next year, it took its first step in the international market by opening three purchase bases in China.

In 2011, the firm established two more warehouses in New Jersey and Kansas, USA.

In 2012, GoPlus established stores on third-party online retailer platforms, Amazon and eBay.

In 2013, it entered the European market with its warehouse in Hamburg, Germany.

In 2014, GoPlus further expanded its international operations by opening an office and warehouse in Moscow. In 2015, the company established its warehouse in Ipswich, UK.[6]

In 2016, GoPlus was rebranded to Costway with its online store, directly selling products to customers.

In 2017, Costway opened a new warehouse in California, USA. In 2018, the platform restructured its online stores in the UK and Germany and opened an online store in Canada.[7]

In early 2018, Costway faced a significant challenge when its U.S. online store was hit by a fraud ring, leading to a drop in revenue. The company saw its fraud rate soar, bank declines increase, and it enrolled in Visa’s Excessive Chargeback Program (ECP). The dire circumstances led to a drop in revenue and with a chargeback rate between 14%-16% and less than half of the orders being approved.[8]

However, the company quickly turned things around by opting for Riskified's payment gateway-recommended, AI-powered chargeback guarantee solution, which reduced the fraud rate, met Visa's acceptable thresholds, and boosted the approval rate to make up for lost revenue. Costway opted for Riskified’s fraud protection and experienced unsuccessful attempts of 1,300 fraudulent checkouts.[9]

Products and Services[edit]

Costway offers various furniture products, including sofas, chairs, beds, tables, and more. The platform's catalogue features products from a variety of brands and designers. The company's collection of products comprises multiple categories, including home, garden, sports and hardware equipment, auto parts, DIY projects, business, and industry products, outdoor accessories, baby and toddler supplies, pet supplies, toys, renovation essentials, and smart and heavy machinery.[10][11]

The company also produces goods but retails products in its online stores. Managers at Costway either search for suppliers themselves or permit companies producing different household appliances to label their products with the name “Costway” and supply it to the company’s warehouses. The company then delivers the products to customers who place orders in their online stores. Most of the suppliers of Costway are different Chinese companies.[12] Costway services include free shipping on all orders, a 30-day return policy, and exceptional customer service.

Partnership[edit]

Costway has formed partnerships with several companies, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, eBay, Wayfair, Homedepot, and Wish.

Technology[edit]

Costway uses its patented smart home technology to revolutionize the shopping experience.[13] The company has incorporated AI/VR mobile applications online and offline tools to improve customers' shopping experience. Costways uses AI chatbots to respond to customer inquiries in real time. Additionally, customers can view products with a 360-degree zoom capability and augmented 360° VR showrooms.

Subsidiaries[edit]

Costway has several subsidiaries, including Goplus, Relax4Life, Fantask, Dreamade, Gymax, Honey Joy, Powerstone, Tangkula, and Superfit.[14]
