History

1968 - 1970: Founding and early history

Beginning in July 1968 as a partnership between Gordon Smith and Larry Adams, Opry magazine's first editor was Bryan Chalker. BBC Radio 2 "Country Club" presenter and television continuity announcer David Allan[5] started writing a monthly column for Opry when they published their first edition and he is still contributing his monthly column, The David Allan Page, for Country Music People today. Bob Powel joined the team as a feature writer, commencing in issue number five (November 1968).

1970 - 1976: Name change and new editor

After 18 months, due to printing, distribution and finance difficulties, Opry folded and Larry Adams' solution was to hand ownership over to Reg Field and start again under the newly named Country Music People. Bob Powel became editor in January 1971.

1977 - 1983: Tony Byworth takes over

In January 1977 Tony Byworth took over as editor. The launch of the Critics' Choice, the annual roundup of contributors' favourites, was started in January 1978 and continues to this day.

1983 - 1987: The return of Bob Powel

Bob Powel began his second term as editor.

1987 - 2008: Craig Baguley at the helm

It was announced in July 1987 that Country Music People had been sold to Craig Baguley and Jon Philibert. The takeover also saw a new look for the magazine.

2009 - present

Current editor and owner, Duncan Warwick, began editorship in January 2009.[6]

Awards

Editors Craig Baguley and Duncan Warwick have both been awarded the Country Music Association's prestigious 'Wesley Rose (Foreign Media Achievement) Award' for their contributions to country music through the magazine.
