Coup de Tête is the first studio album by Kip Hanrahan released in June 1982 featuring guests including Jerry Gonzalez, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Chico Freeman.[1] It was described by Cashbox Magazine as "one of the most daring, innovative records we've heard in years"[2] India Song was written by Carlos D'Alessio and Marguerite Duras. Heart On My Sleeve was written by Teo Macero[3] It has been described as "transcending new wave, no wave, avante-garde jazz, and several other styles.[4]

Critical Reception[edit]

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a review said "Once in a blue moon, a new record will stick out, I'll play it again and again. I'll call friends with similar tastes and interests and play it for them. And once I've listened to the album a dozen times or so, all of the accumulated frustration from listening to mundane products will have somehow been eased. Kip Hanrahan's coup de tete is such an album."[5]

Le Monde described "Latin rhythms take center stage in seven of the nine pieces, as they are doing right now in the most typical New York music, where jazz solos take off to an irresistibly pulsating Latin-Afro-urban beat. Violent eroticism, urban angst and a hell of a dose of humor participate in this musical cocktail of rare intensity."[6]

Along with Develops An Edge, The Boston Globe described Coup De Tete as "Avant-Garde you can dance to."[7]
