Early Life

Courtney Jordan (born May 18, 1988) is an American billionaire entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist. He is best known for founding the Neyius, a multinational conglomerate with investments in media, technology, hospitality, and renewable energy. He also leads the Courtney Jordan Foundation (CJF), a global non-profit focused on economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, and environmental conservation. [1]

Courtney Jordan was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. His entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 8 with a neighborhood gumball vending machine business. He later attended North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he refined his business acumen through mentorship from Dr. Maria Lumpkin and Chancellor Charlie Nelms, who he credits with significantly shaping his approach to business. In 2008, Jordan gained attention for voicing his support for John McCain and Sarah Palin during the presidential election, despite being a Black and Bengali student at an HBCU. Later, he worked with student government and the campus NAACP to bring Barack Obama to NCCU to speak—a visit that did not sway his vote in the election. Jordan frequently acknowledges his father’s influence in building his foundation in business, which was further strengthened by his experiences at NCCU.[2]

Despite facing challenges such as a learning disability and significant family losses, including the deaths of his father and sister, Jordan remained dedicated to his entrepreneurial ambitions.[3]

Career

Jordan first gained recognition in 2010 by developing PikPak, a security feature for Microsoft Windows Phone, which was later acquired by Microsoft. This early success led to consulting opportunities with major corporations such as:

  • SEGA
  • American Express[4]

In 2018, he acquired and rebranded The Odyssey Channel, which later became part of his media company Scenester. [5]

Battling Cancer While Building Neyius

Jordan overcame a battle with cancer while expanding his business empire. He credits his survival[6] [7]and success to:

  • Faith in God
  • Mentorship and support systems
  • A relentless work ethic

Neyius Corporation & Global Expansion (2019–Present)

In 2020, Jordan transformed his private equity firm Venture Beyond Capital into the Neyius Corporation, expanding into:

  • Neyius Connect – A networking service for businesses and governments.
  • Neyius Media – A media conglomerate with holdings in television, music catalogs, and digital platforms.[8]
  • Neyius Hotel Group – A hospitality company managing 22 franchised hotel brands.[9]
  • Host Rite – The UK’s largest domain provider.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jordan strategically invested in undervalued travel and hospitality stocks, including:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • MGM Resorts
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Airlines

By 2023, Neyius had expanded into 17 countries with 26 subsidiaries.[10]

RentSpotMe.com

In 2024, Courtney Jordan, under the guidance of his protégé Nick Gallardo, the former mayoral candidate for Siler City and current CFO of the Courtney Jordan Foundation, made a significant investment in the tech startup RentSpotMe.com. The investment, amounting to $60 million, secured a 21% stake in the company, which had a pre-money valuation of over $220 million USD at the time of the deal. This strategic move marked Jordan's continued involvement in disruptive innovations within the real estate and technology sectors. [11]

RentSpotMe.com is a platform aimed at simplifying the rental process, connecting landlords and tenants with innovative financial tools and services. The company had been gaining traction in the tech and real estate space, offering unique solutions to the housing market. [12]

Following the initial investment, RentSpotMe.com entered a second funding round that successfully raised over $100 million, increasing the post-money valuation of the company to more than $320 million USD. The growth and success of RentSpotMe.com attracted significant attention from industry giants, including offers from major players like Dave and Chime, both of which sought to acquire the company.[13]

Media and Investigative Journalism

In 2022, Jordan launched the investigative newspaper Chatham Weekly, which assembled a team of renowned journalists:

  • Rachel Schuster (co-founder of USA Today)
  • Stuart Lawrence (former Huffington Post contributor)
  • Elizabeth Keegan (New York Times investigative journalist)

He also created the podcast Chatham Discussions, which explores issues of systemic racism and economic disparity in Chatham County, North Carolina. [14]

  • Local entrepreneurship programs
  • Sustainable business development
  • Technology and education access in rural areas

In 2015, Jordan led a group of 50 students from his Term Utility Program on a two-week cultural and educational tour of Europe.

Research Study and Lecture

In 2023, Nora Shipp, in collaboration with Mohammad Khan, conducted a comprehensive research study titled "Bridging the Generational Wealth Gap: Examining Black Economic Empowerment Through Robert F. Smith and Courtney Jordan." The study explored the different approaches to wealth creation by two prominent Black billionaires—Robert F. Smith, a Baby Boomer, and Courtney Jordan, a Millennial. Shipp's research, which included interviews, historical data, and policy analysis, investigated how systemic barriers and generational shifts influence wealth-building strategies within the Black community.

Shipp later lectured on her findings at prestigious universities, including Columbia and Brown, where she discussed the contrasting wealth trajectories of Smith and Jordan. The research uncovered how Jordan, through his tech ventures and global investments, accumulated wealth through diverse strategies, including investments in fintech, telecommunications, and energy sectors. The study also highlighted Jordan’s use of trusts and shell corporations to manage and protect his wealth, revealing the intricate financial structures he maintains.

While both entrepreneurs faced significant challenges, their generational differences led to divergent methods of navigating economic and social landscapes. Shipp's research contributes to the ongoing conversation about Black economic empowerment, offering insights into how future generations can address the structural inequalities that have historically hindered wealth accumulation in the Black community.
