Covelya Group is a UK-headquartered Private Limited Company established in June 2021, having previously traded as Sonardyne Group Limited from April 2020. The group's component companies date back to 1967 in the case of Chelsea Technologies, and 1971 for Sonardyne. The Covelya Group are all technology companies operating mainly in the Science, Energy, Defence and Environmental monitoring sectors, with a historic focus on ocean-related activities. They develop, manufacture, sell and support scientific instruments, sensors and provide solutions to clients worldwide.

Sectors[edit]

Covelya Group companies currently operates with four major sectors: Science, Energy, Defence, Environment.

Science[edit]

Covelya Group companies have supported oceanographic science since the last 1960s, for example the Chelsea Technologies 'SeaSoar' towed undulating instrument was a standard piece of equipment for oceanographic science throughout the 1990s World Ocean Circulation Experiment.

Energy[edit]

Covelya Group companies have been associated with the offshore oil and gas sector since the 1970s, providing subsea position fixing, navigation and sensor equipment to enable safe subsea operations during the survey, construction, operation and decommissioning of offshore industrial infrastructure. As the energy sector transitions to offshore renewables and develops carbon capture and storage at offshore geological sites, Covelya Group products are used by contractors, survey companies and infrastructure operators.

Defence[edit]

Sensors and instrumentation manufactured by Covelya Group companies are used in defence applications such as subsea position fixing, navigation, target detection and ranging, and for the safe operations of submarines and military divers.

Environment[edit]

Environmental sensors are required for air and water quality measurement, pollution detection and monitoring, and ensuring compliance with quality standards such as the ISO14000 series.

History[edit]

Covelya Group Limited was formed in April 2020.

The founding company, Sonardyne International Limited was formed in 1971 by John Partridge to develop products that would make subsea operations safer and more efficient by providing industry users with equipment that would enable divers and submersible equipment operators to orientate themselves underwater, accurately position offshore structures, and map submerged wreckage prior to salvage and recovery. As technology advanced, products evolved to enable live video transfer from submersibles, subsea optical datalinks and new capabilities in tsunami detection and warning. Sonardyne remains the largest operating company of the Covelya Group.

Wavefront Systems Limited joined Sonardyne in 2008 to contribute to the development of imaging sonar systems. This was the start of the Group's preference for working across group companies to encourage the joint development of products, technologies and markets.

Chelsea Technologies Limited was acquired in October 2018 to increase group access to new technologies within and beyond Sonardyne’s traditional markets. Chelsea's strengths within environmental monitoring technology enabled diversification and new opportunities for the group.

EIVA a/s joined Covelya group in May 2019 adding capabilities in software, equipment and services across subsea markets.

Voyis Imaging Inc was acquired in January 2020. It focuses on underwater laser scanners and imaging payloads, with products that interface with those from other Covelya group manufacturers.
