Covid-19 mutation

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The UK has identified a fast-moving new variant of the coronavirus that is more than 70% more transmissible than existing strains. The distinct phylogenetic cluster (named lineage B.1.1.7) was detected within the COG-UK surveillance dataset. This cluster has been growing rapidly over the past 4 weeks and since been observed in other UK locations, indicating further spread. The new strain of coronavirus is now 'out of control', authorities have said. One of the mutations in the new variant deletes six bases in the viral genome that encode amino acids 69 and 70 of the spike protein. By coincidence, this region is one of three genomic targets used by some PCR tests, and so, in those tests, that channel comes up negative on the new variant, the PCR tests use the other two channels -- not affected by the mutation -- the tests should work fine.there are only 23 mutations in the genetic code of 30,000 nucleotides, the variant does seem about 40-70 per cent more transmissible". One of these variations encodes an S-protein mutation, D614G, in the carboxy (C)-terminal region of the S1 domain 21, 22, 23, 26 and 30.
