Craft is a document and note-taking app developed by Craft Docs Ltd. It offers the ability to write, store, and share a wide range of document types including notes, articles, and to-do lists. Craft came to prominence in 2021 when it won Apple Inc's Mac App of the Year award.[1] [2]
Craft is available for iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Web.
The company currently employs approximately 50 staff, with headquarters in Budapest, Hungary, and a second base in Edinburgh, UK.
History
Craft was founded by Balint Orosz in Budapest, Hungary, in July 2019, after finding himself ‘frustrated by the process of collecting, expressing and sharing [my] thoughts'.[3] [4] [5]
Prior to launching Craft, Orosz founded the mobile app development agency, Distinction, which was acquired by the travel site, Skyscanner in 2014, [6]. Orosz then joined Skyscanner as Head of Product for Apps, and continued to work there before leaving in 2017.
In April 2021, Craft secured an $8 million Series A round led by Creandum. Also participating was InReach Ventures, Gareth Williams (former CEO and co-founder of Skyscanner), and a number of other tech entrepreneurs, many of whom were ex-Skyscanner.[7]
In December 2021, Craft Docs was named Mac App of the Year at Apple’s App Store Best of 2021 Awards.[8] [9]
In September 2022, Craft raised $12.2 million in a Series B round led by EBRD Venture Capital, with further participation from earlier backers, Creandum and InReach Ventures.[10] [11][12] [13]
In November 2022, Craft integrated GPT-based AI into its product.[14]
Software
Craft is primarily a note-taking[15] and document-building tool. Described as a ‘marriage between Canva and Notion’ by Entrepreneur Magazine [16], it’s been reviewed positively for its intuitive, simple nature and its capability to instantaneously sync across all devices.[17] [18]
Features
Blocks
Craft Docs utilizes a ‘block editing’ system enabling users to ‘drag and drop’ content such as text paragraphs, images, or embedded links, and reposition it within the document, as opposed to the traditional ‘cut and paste’ system used in document editors such as MS Word or Google Docs.
Docs within Docs
Craft enables users to build ‘documents within documents’ ad infinitum, making it popular as an organizational and documentation tool.
Craft AI
Craft has integrated Open AI’s GPT into its software enabling users to utilize the writing, editing, and summarisation functions of the AI.
Pricing
Craft is a freemium SaaS business with a four-tier pricing model ranging from a free ‘starter’ version through to an Enterprise license version.
