Crafted at Powdermills is a hotel and members' club located near Battle, East Sussex, England. The property occupies a 78-acre (32 ha) estate on the site of the former Powdermills gunpowder works. It reopened in 2025 following redevelopment by hospitality entrepreneur Chris King as the first property within the Crafted hospitality brand.
Location
Crafted at Powdermills is situated near the town of Battle in East Sussex, approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) south-east of London. The estate is accessible via Battle railway station and is located close to the towns of Hastings, Rye and Bexhill-on-Sea.
History
The estate occupies the site of the former Powdermills gunpowder works, which operated from the 17th century along the Asten stream. Powdermills House was built in 1676 and rebuilt following an explosion in 1796. During the 18th and 19th centuries the works produced gunpowder for military and industrial purposes before production ceased in 1876.
During the 20th century the estate was converted into a hotel. It later closed for redevelopment before reopening in 2025 as Crafted at Powdermills.
Redevelopment
The redevelopment of the estate was led by Chris King. Interior design was undertaken by House of Dré, while furniture and joinery included work by furniture designer Sebastian Cox using timber sourced from the estate.
The redevelopment retained elements of the historic buildings while introducing new hospitality, dining, recreational and event facilities.
Facilities
The property comprises 54 guest rooms, suites and cottages located across the main house, converted barns and lakeside accommodation.
Facilities include restaurants and bars, co-working spaces, workshop studios, padel courts, a gym, wellness facilities, lakeside sauna and cold-water bathing amenities, and event spaces used for weddings, retreats and corporate events.
Environmental initiatives
The estate includes habitat restoration and rewilding projects across parts of its grounds. The redevelopment incorporated reclaimed and repurposed materials, while food-growing initiatives support the property's restaurants.
Reception
Following its reopening in 2025, Crafted at Powdermills received coverage in national and international publications including the Financial Times, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, Condé Nast Traveller, and Wallpaper*, which reported on the redevelopment of the estate and its hospitality and design concept.
