Biography[edit]
Craig Bailey was born February 3, 1960 in Cincinnati, OH. His journey through music began at eight years old when he began playing recorder. Shortly, he joined the Cincinnati All City Boys Choir. In junior high, he began playing flute, clarinet and sax, which he continued throughout high school and college.
Craig received a BFA from University of Miami and a MM from Queens College in New York City.
While in New York, he joined drummer Charli Persip’s Superband, Panama Francis and his Savoy Sultans, the TanaReid Quintet, Bobby Watson’s Tailor Made Big Band and the Tom Harrell Big Band. Bailey worked as both a performer and composer/arranger while with these ensembles.
Craig is co-foiunder of THE BROOKLYN BIG BAND, alongside fellow saxophonist and composer Tim Armacost.
Bailey’s albums include: A New Journey (referenced in The Encyclopedia of Jazz) ,Brooklyn (Evidence Records, 2001); Brooklyn Big Band Live at Sweet Rhythm (Candid Records, 2009); and most recently, Music à la Fleek (October 2016 as Craig Bailey and The Ohio Jazz Players).
Craig is a Yamaha Artist and performs on the YSS-62 and the YAS-875EX.
Craig Bailey is now Assistant Professor of Music in Jazz Saxophone at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) where he also serves as music director/conductor of CCM's Jazz Lab Band.
