Crazy Japanese (also known online as Teacher Tanuki) is a Japanese online streamer and Japanese language educator. Her live streams focus on IRL (in-real-life) coverage of Japanese festivals, travel, food, and language lessons for international audiences. Affiliated with the Japanese government as part of her Twitch activities, she delivers live cultural and language programming to an international audience.[1][2]

Early life and education

Tanuki was born and raised in Japan. After graduating from a Japanese university, she studied abroad in Toronto, Canada. She later participated in exchange programs in China and South Korea, learning new languages and perspectives.

Following her studies, Tanuki worked for United Nations–related organizations, traveling internationally and working as a translator and interpreter. She later became a flight attendant for a foreign airline, before starting her career as a Japanese language teacher in Cambodia, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Japan.

While living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she founded a Japanese language school and began offering online lessons.[3]

Career

2019–2020: YouTube beginnings

Tanuki began publishing Japanese-language lessons and short videos on YouTube, presenting cultural explanations and beginner-language content for learners worldwide.[4]

2020–2022: Transition to Twitch and IRL streaming

In 2020 she launched a Twitch channel to livestream IRL content across Japan, covering festivals, street food, and local life while interacting with an international chat. Her streams frequently include multilingual commentary and live language teaching segments.[1]

2022: Notable events and live moments

  • December 2022: Tanuki participated and won Cooked, a live, Twitch-streamed cooking event in Tokyo; Tokyo Weekender covered the event and noted its format and participants.[5]
  • January 2022: Tanuki was involved in an encounter where an intoxicated streamer followed her in public; coverage discussed harassment risks for IRL creators.[6][7]

2023–present: Continued streaming and cultural commentary

Tanuki continued festival coverage and educational streams. In 2025 she provided commentary referenced in reports about other creators' Japan IRL trips, emphasizing cultural context and public perception in some articles.[8]

In 2024, she participated in events in Italy like Vittoria Comics & Games and Pescara Comix and Games, where she performed and created content to engage both Japanese fans and international audiences.[9]

Taxi incident in Singapore (February 2025)

While visiting Singapore in February 2025, Tanuki described one of her “worst experiences” when a taxi driver initially ignored and dismissed her despite her speaking Mandarin, only to abruptly change his attitude once he realized she was Japanese. She framed the behavior as a manifestation of racial stereotyping and generalized perceptions.[10][11]

Content and style

Tanuki's streams are multilingual, often in Japanese and English, and blend travelogue-style IRL coverage with informal language lessons, cultural explanations, and audience Q&A. Her content emphasizes accessibility for language learners and highlights local festivals and cuisine.

Other ventures

Tanuki operates a personal website advertising language lessons and links to her teaching services and social platforms.[12]

Personal life

Tanuki is one of 3 sisters, being an identical twin to her younger sister known online as Chef Kimie.[13]
