Gjon Deromemaj (born 18 March 1964 in Smokthinë, Vlorë) is an Albanian painter whose artistic career has developed in Albania and Greece.[1]
Early life
Gjon Deromemaj was born on 18 March 1964 in Vlorë and grew up in Smokthinë, where his family was interned during the period of the communist regime in Albania.
His interest in art, particularly painting, emerged during his childhood. He initially drew on stones in his village, regarding it as a form of play. In the evenings, in conditions with limited lighting, he used the light of an oil lamp to create figures and images through the shadow of his father on the wall. Over time, he progressed from drawing on stones and creating shadow images to drawing on paper.
During art competitions held throughout his childhood and youth, in which hundreds of children and young people participated, he achieved first place on several occasions. Due to the circumstances of the time, he was unable to immediately attend the Institute of Arts in Tirana like some of his peers.
Education
Following the political changes of the 1990s, Deromemaj pursued his ambition of obtaining higher education in the arts in Tirana. He studied Monumental Painting at the University of Arts in Tirana from 2000 to 2004 and completed his studies with an average grade of 10.[2]
His studies enabled him to deepen his knowledge of art history, artistic techniques and forms of visual expression.
Artistic career
Deromemaj has had an extensive career in painting and has worked in a variety of styles and forms of figurative expression. His body of work includes landscapes, portraits and figurative compositions.
His work is characterized by attention to detail and a personal approach to colour, form and composition. His paintings have also addressed themes related to Albanian culture, memory and landscape.
Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Greece, including exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Rhodes and Symi, as well as in other Greek cities.
Career in Greece
After moving to Greece, Deromemaj continued his artistic career and has lived and worked in the country for approximately 18 years.
An important part of his artistic activity has been associated with the island of Symi, in the southeastern Aegean Sea. He operated his own gallery there, where his works were exhibited and where he pursued his artistic activities.

Teaching
In addition to his work as a painter, Deromemaj has worked as an art teacher and professor. He has taught art history and colour theory, passing his knowledge and experience on to younger generations.

Deromemaj has also created decorative works for various public and private spaces. His work in this area has included interior projects and hotel decoration, including projects for hotels belonging to the Esperides group.
In Symi, in addition to exhibiting his paintings, he has contributed to the island's cultural and artistic environment through his decorative works.
Exhibitions and awards
Throughout his career, Deromemaj has participated in numerous art exhibitions and competitions in Greece.
In Athens, at events attended by approximately 800 painters from different European countries, he was awarded first prize on three occasions.
His participation in exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Symi and other Greek cities constitutes an important part of his artistic career.
Studio and artistic activity
Deromemaj's studio has served as a space for the creation of his works and for the development of his artistic activity. Various works using different techniques and styles have been produced there and subsequently presented in galleries and exhibitions.
Connection with Smokthinë
Despite living and working outside Albania, Deromemaj has maintained connections with his birthplace and with the cultural traditions of Smokthinë.
On 24 June 2001, his name was mentioned among the people involved in an initiative to preserve and promote the folklore traditions of Smokthinë and in the establishment of the folk group Kristalet e Smokthinës. The initiative aimed to preserve the songs and traditions of the Smokthinë region and to promote the area's cultural heritage.[4]
Bibliography
Deromemaj's name has also appeared in Albanian publications. In the book Misteri by Eqerem Canaj, published by Botimet Toena, the author acknowledges Deromemaj as the "Vlora painter Gjon Deromemaj" for his assistance in facilitating the publication of the book.[5]
