Criptoloja is the first cryptocurrency exchange licensed[2] by Banco de Portugal, the Portuguese Central Bank, to offer consumers in Portugal and the Eurozone cryptocurrency trading services, including conversion to and from fiat and bank deposits via SEPA Single Euro Payments Area. To increase Portuguese consumers' awareness of the cryptocurrencies market and overall financial literacy, Criptoloja offers free biweekly courses[3]
History
Criptoloja started as a physical store for digital assets, located in Av. da Liberdade, Lisbon, managed by Pedro Borges and Luis Gomes, two Portuguese executives with careers in the financial sector. Following the new regulation published by the central bank[4], Criptoloja suspended activities and applied for a new license. Finally, commercial operation initiated in October 2021, after the launch[5] of the online platform.
Acquisition
In January 2022, the Brazilian firm 2TM, backed by Softbank and Mercado Libre, announced it had acquired a controlling stake in Criptoloja[6], pairing the Portuguese start-up with the major Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin.
