Crisfield, Kansas
Crisfield is a ghost town in Harper County, Kansas, United States.
History
The post office was originally in Otego, north of Crisfield. It had been open since 1882. In 1885 the name was changed to Crisfield. The village grew rapidly and its population was estimated at 1500 citizens. The town had a school, a Methodist church, a post office, two banks, a warehouse, two hotels, stables, four grocery shops, two stockyards, a pharmacy and a grain lift.[1] In 1923, a cyclone devastated the town. Water supply problems soon reappeared. The main item that the town did not have was water. This is the main reason for the town's demise. In 1918, Crisfield had 43 citizens. The post office finally discontinued in 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Reneau were the last citizens of Crisfield. Mrs. Reneau was the postmaster when the post office closed.
