Cristian “Cris” Sulser is a writer and film director.

Education[edit]

Sulser graduated from the teacher's training college at Kantonsschule Heerbrugg in Switzerland. In 2010, he got his diploma in Screenwriting from the one-year program at Drehbuchschule Berlin in Germany and from the University of California, Los Angeles. Later, he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Film Directing from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.

Biography[edit]

Sulser was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland where he completed his education at the teacher's training college. In 1998 he startet working as assistant director for the Swiss opera director Dieter Kaegi and, among others, worked for Opera Ireland, Opéra-Théâtre de Metz and the Lismore Opera Festival.

He moved on to work as assistant for television producer Gail Berman at Regency Television in Los Angeles where he worked on a number of television shows (Malcolm in the Middle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Roswell) and later became an assistant director for independent feature films.

Back in Switzerland, Sulser became the host for Nickelodeon Switzerland for the Swiss national television network SRF (Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen) and amongst others, was in front of the camera for his comedy show Rätpäck. In 2004, he founded the production company Second Unit Mediaproductions together with Sven Epiney where he engages in film and television productions as director, writer or producer.

Since 2013, Sulser lives in Los Angeles and Switzerland. He works as a freelance director and writer for film, television and theatre productions. He frequently engages as story consultant and lecturer.

Awards[edit]

Sulser's short films Scrabble and Goodbye Vesna have been screened at over 150 international film festivals and won over thirty awards.[1] (USA Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Cayman International Film Festival, Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films, Porto Rico Comic Con)[2] His television work has been awarded with two Prix Walos[3][citation needed] and a Swiss Television Award[citation needed] for Best Television Show.[4] Sulser has been selected for the New Director's Film Festival[5] and has been named a filmmaker to watch by Spotlight.[6]
