Dr Cristina Fontes Lindemann Hickman BSc PGDip MSc PhD ACS ACE HCPC (born May 1982) is a Brazilian-born leading certified clinical embryologist, lecturer and supervisor at Imperial College London, and experienced researcher with a PhD in embryology. Hickman co-authored the first paper to describe the relationship between blastocyst morphokinetics and ploidy, and has written numerous published papers and book chapters and has organised and presented several hands-on workshops worldwide on vitrification, ICSI, biopsy, and embryo selection.
In 2019, and largely due to her work and results achieved in using AI (Artificial Intelligence) and automation to enhance embryology, Hickman was nominated and appeared on the longlist in Computer Weekly's list of the 'Most influential women in tech in the UK'.
Hickman has been invited to present her research at conferences worldwide, including ESHRE, Alpha, ASRM, ASPIRE[1], Fertility, UEARS and other top conferences in the IVF field.
Early life and further education
Cristina Hickman, then Cristina Lindemann, was born in Porto Alegre, south Brazil to Roberto Lindemann and Iara Lindemann. Cristina, the middle child of three sisters, has a younger sister, Roberta, and an elder sister, Carmen. Hickman attended St. Paul's School, a British international school in São Paulo, Brazil, studying on the IB (International Baccalaureate) programme through senior level. She then attended Southampton University in the United Kingdom from 2000 to 2003, where she read a BSc (Hons) in Oceanography with Marine Biology.
From Southampton, Hickman joined The Scottish Agricultural College in 2003 to earn a PGDip in Mammalian Reproduction and Fertility, and then on to the University of Aberdeen to complete an MSc in Reproduction and Fertility. Then, from 2005, she earned a PhD in Embryology at the University of Edinburgh.
Personal life
In 2007, then Cristina Lindemann married Thomas Hickman, and her surname changed to Cristina Hickman. They have two children, Mia Hickman[2], an aspiring scientist and young author, and Leonardo Hickman.
