Cristina Pujades (Spain, 1962) is a Spanish cell biologist and neurobiologist. Since 2002, she has been a principal investigator and professor at the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Pompeu Fabra. She has also served as Academic Secretary (2007–2010) and Vice-Chair (2010–2013), and the Vice-Rector of Professorate at the UPF. She has been leading a research group working on how morphogenesis and cell fate acquisition are coordinated to build up the embryonic brain.[1][2]

Life and education

Cristina earned her PhD in Biology from the University of Barcelona in 1991. Afterwards, she did a postdoctoral stay at the DFCI–Harvard Medical School in Boston from 1991–1995. Then, she moved to Paris for a postdoctoral fellowship (1995–1999) at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), and got a permanent position at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (1999–2002). While there, she was fascinated by developmental neurobiology, and how one goes from DNA and genes to the generation of form, which has been the main focus of her latest scientific career. In 2002, she joined the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Pompeu Fabra at the Park for Biomedical Research in Barcelona (PRBB).[3][4]

While at UPF, she has also served in institutional positions. First as Academic Secretary and as Vice-Chair of the Department (2007–2015), and later as Vice-Rector of Professorate and Vice-Rector of Talent Recruitment and Retaining Policy (2017–2021). She has been awarded the ICREA Academia (2016–2020, 2021–2025).[3]

Research and scientific work

Since 2002, Cristina has led the Neurodevelopmental Dynamics Group in the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Pompeu Fabra. Her group studies how spatiotemporally coordinated cell progenitor specification and differentiation occur during morphogenesis to construct a functional brain. They are using the zebrafish embryo as a model system, which allows them to combine cutting-edge complementary approaches such as: CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, high-resolution 4D-imaging paired with cell tracking tools, and analyses of gene regulatory landscapes. The group endeavors to map the ontogeny of differentiated neurons, and to reveal the sequence of temporal transitions from progenitor to the differentiated state.[5]

For her work, she has won various grants and awards, including the Pla Nacional del MINECO (Spanish Government), DURSI (Govern Català), Marató TV3, DAAD (German Government), PICS (French and Catalan Government). She has been a member of the executive board of the Council for Culture in Barcelona since 2017. She has been a member of the Council for Sustainable Development (CADS) since 2019. She has received the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) Acadèmia award from the Generalitat de Catalunya (2016–2020), which recognizes research-intensive university professors.[6]
