The Critical Media Lab is a research creation initiative within the English Language and Literature Department at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Members of the Critical Media Lab, including students and artistic collaborators, create objects-to-think-with that reflect on the impacts of technology on society and the more-than-human world.[2][3][4][5] The Critical Media Lab is currently located inside the start-up incubator Communitech Hub [6] at 151 Charles Street West, Kitchener, Ontario. It has occupied various locations around Kitchener-Waterloo since its launch in 2008. [7]
In 2018, the Critical Media Lab contributed to the development of the Tech for Good Declaration with Communitech, Deloitte, Rideau Hall Foundation, and Canadian Innovation Space.[8] The Critical Media Lab also participates in exhibitions with the Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener & Area (CAFKA).[9][10]
The Critical Media Lab was founded by Marcel O'Gorman, Canada Research Chair and Professor of English.[11][12] The Lab is home to the Experimental Digital Media (XDM) Graduate Program, which emphasizes a hands-on, critical approach to digital technology. [13]
