Criticker is a movie recommendation engine and community founded in 2007.[1][2] by Michael Powell and Jürgen Horn. Criticker matches users to one another using a measurement called the Taste Compatibility Index, or TCI. Users can get recommendations based on the rankings of their most similar matches. Criticker allows users to leave short mini-reviews for films, mark users as friends, and participate in a forum.

Website[edit]

History[edit]

Criticker launched in 2007 as a free service which aimed to match users with one another. Within a year, without any funding or advertising campaign, Criticker had attracted thousands of registered users from word-of-mouth referrals. Criticker underwent major site redesigns in 2014, when a sponsorship system was introduced, in again in early 2018, when it expanded into video games.

TCI (Taste Compatibility Index)[edit]

The TCI, or Taste Compatability Index, is the basis of Criticker's functionality. In essence, this is an average of the difference between two users' scores. The lower the TCI, the less different their scores. Criticker allows a rating system between 0 and 100[3]. In order to account for differences in ranking styles, it is the percentiles of each score which are compared, as opposed to the scores themselves[4]. In order to begin building TCIs, a user must have at least 10 rankings to compare against the pool of other users. A TCI can only be built when at least 3 films are shared.

PSI (Probable Score Index)[edit]

The PSI, or Probable Score Index, is the score which Criticker predicts a user will give a particular film. It is calculated using the scores of their ten users with the best TCI, who have seen the film in question.[5]

Registration and Sponsorship[edit]

Criticker is open to guests, although full usage of the site is limited to registered members. Registration is free[6]. Guests are limited to 50 rankings. In 2014, Criticker introduced sponsorship, which allows users to contribute to the maintenance of the site. Benefits of sponsorship include an ads-free version of the site, the full daily rebuilding of TCIs and PSIs, and special charts and graphs.
