Cropduster is the first studio album that is from the American rock band Cropduster.
Background[edit]
The eight-track pop rock album was released with MK Ultra Experiment, in 1998.[1] It was produced and mixed by Machine, who recalls for The Star-Ledger, "I loved their sense of humor, it made very little sense, and had funny sound effects," adding "it was cute and catchy, and that sense of humor made it extremely lovable." The album is described as alternative country.[2] It was released digitally with Mint 400 Records, on 6 November 2012.
Reception[edit]
Providing a succinct history of the band in his review, Jersey Beat editor Jim Testa explains "after playing bass in several failed local acts, Marc Maurizi nearly chopped his thumb off in an industrial accident. While recuperating, he decided to teach himself guitar, learn how to write songs, and step in front of the mic as frontman in his next band. Cropduster displays the fruits of those endeavors." He begins his review by calling the album "eight catchy numbers that showcase Maurizi's sarcastic wit, ably abetted by Tom Gerke's nimble lead guitar and exquisite harmony vocals," and concludes by noting Cropduster's "disarming earnestness and Maurizi's almost sing/song delivery [which] slyly mask[s] the group's potent pop chops."[3]
Jordan Mamone for CMJ writes "Cropduster inspires a whole new label, 'eccentric country.'"[2] Cropduster spend several weeks on the CMJ charts, peaking at No. 56 on the college radio play chart.[4][2]
