Croquet Corporation is a software and systems development company.[1] It develops an edge collaboration platform, global developer infrastructure, tools and frameworks for creating real-time, multiuser web and mobile applications.[2][3] The company’s technologies were created by David A. Smith, Alan Kay, David P. Reed and Andreas Raab.[4][5][6][7]

History[edit]

In 1990, Croquet founder and CTO David A. Smith met Alan Kay, who was a senior fellow at Apple at the time.[5] In 1994, Smith created the first prototype of what would later become Croquet. In 2000, Kay introduced Smith to David P. Reed, whose 1976 MIT thesis on replicated computation formed the basis of how Croquet would be built. Smith also met Andreas Raab through Kay, and the group started the Croquet Project. In 2018, Alan Kay's team of engineers, Vanessa Freudenberg, Aran Lunzer, Yoshiki Ohshima, as well as Smith's collaborator from Red Storm Entertainment, Brian Upton, joined Smith as co-founders of Croquet Corporation, to build a software system for creating multiuser digital experiences on the web.

Products[edit]

Croquet is a software system for creating multiuser digital experiences on the web. It lets developers build real time multiuser apps without writing a single line of server code, or deploying or managing any servers. Croquet consists of a JavaScript library that grants access to its global network of public reflectors.[8] The Croquet Virtual DOM is a high-level framework that extends the core capabilities of Croquet. It's a set of tools for writing Croquet applications that use a browser’s DOM as multiuser interface elements. The Croquet React bindings is a simple framework for using Croquet together with React.js. It enables the writing of Croquet's View side code in React, which works with the Croquet Model code.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15]

Funding[edit]

In 2020, the company raised its first round of funding. It raised an initial investment of $ 2.7 million, including $ 2.0 million from SIP Global Partners, to bring the platform to developers in key market segments.[6]
