Cross Record
Emily Cross, better known by her artist name, Cross Record, is an American artist, musician, and death doula currently living in Austin, TX.[1] Originally from the Midwest, Cross attended the Art Institute of Chicago where she began self-releasing experimental indie music in 2011. In the words of Paul Simpson, her music features "minimal yet subtly experimental instrumentation, incorporating tape manipulation, woodwinds, and guitars along with wispy vocals...her songs are gently hypnotic."[2] Her debut album, "Be Good," was first released in 2012 before getting a wider release in 2013 by Ba Da Bing Records. In 2016, Ba Da Bing released Cross' second album, named Wabi Sabi after a Japanese philosophy about "beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete."[3]
In 2013, Cross married music engineer Dan Duszynski and together they moved to Dripping Springs, TX. While Cross Record began as Cross alone, Duszynski was instrumental in handling production elements of Wabi Sabi. Now, Cross Record is back to Emily as a solo artist and she released her third and self-titled album on August 2, 2019 via Ba Da Bing Records. On her upcoming tour, Cross will put her death doula skills into practice for "Living Funerals" which she describes as a "3 hour long experience that focuses on turning towards one's own mortality."[4] On June 25, 2019, Cross Record released her latest single, "The Fly," which has been featured in Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Paste, and Tiny Mix Tapes.
