Crossroads is a fantasy role-playing game published by Xanadu Games in 1995.

Gameplay[edit]

Crossroads is a modern fantasy/horror game designed by Jason and Tina Andrew. The game centers around a cosmic struggle between good and evil.[1] Players take on either the role of Sentinels, who are sworn to protect the innocent, or Defilers, who represent the worst in humanity.[2]

Character creation[edit]

Players distribute 40 points between eight attributes, then distribute another 40 points to a list of skills.[2]

Task resolution[edit]

When a player wants their character to attempt a difficult task, the referee determines the difficulty level of the task, the player rolls dice and compares the result to the relevant skill or attribute.[2]

Combat[edit]

Combat can be either physical or metaphysical. The referee can award discretionary Power Points to a character who has fulfilled its Pysche, or penalize a character who has acted contrary to its Essence.[2]

Reception[edit]

In the February 1996 edition of Dragon (Issue 226), Rick Swan called the game "far-reaching", but admitted that the vaguely worded rules around Pysche and Essence made the game "baffling", and said "more background notes would have helped." He concluded, "Still, this a game with a brain, and one worth revisiting — I mean, if I don’t straighten out the cosmos, who will?"[2]
