The Crotalus mictlantecuhtli is a venomous pit viper species native to Mexico. It was first described in 2008 by Lemos-Espinal, Smith, and Cruz. The species is named after Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec god of the underworld. It is commonly known as the Mictlán rattlesnake, the Mictlán rock rattlesnake, or the dark-headed rock rattlesnake.
Description[edit]
The Crotalus mictlantecuhtli is a medium-sized rattlesnake, growing up to 70 cm (27.6 in) in length. It has a triangular-shaped head, which is wider than its neck. Its coloration is highly variable, but it typically has a gray or brown body with darker blotches or bands. The head is usually darker than the body, and it has a characteristic dark band that runs from the eyes to the corner of the mouth. The tail is tipped with a rattle made of keratin, which the snake uses to produce a warning sound.
Distribution and habitat[edit]
The Crotalus mictlantecuhtli is endemic to Mexico, and is found only in the states of San Luis Potosí and Querétaro. It inhabits rocky areas and canyons at elevations between 1,200 and 2,100 meters (3,900 and 6,900 ft) above sea level.
Conservation[edit]
The Crotalus mictlantecuhtli is listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to its restricted range and ongoing habitat destruction. The species is also protected by Mexican law, and its trade is regulated under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
