Crowhurst is a Philadelphia-based harsh noise/black metal group founded by composer Jay Gambit consisting of Jim Reed, Sean Clintonov and Mac Stephens. The first iterations of the project were started in Philadelphia in 2011.

History[edit]

Founding and early years[edit]

Jay Gambit founded Crowhurst in Philadelphia. The composer had been performing in bands since he was in high school. The group Drug Ring had gained notoriety with its 2011 demo, Cavity but quickly disbanded.

Soon after, Gambit decided to start the Crowhurst project as a rejection of all of the restrictions he saw on bands in his community. This allowed him to work outside of the constraints of genre and lineup, which led to a number of unorthodox collaborations.

Recent touring & releases[edit]

In 2013 the project became more active and the album Aghoree was released on the Chondritic Sound label. In support, the group has performed extensively around their hometown of Los Angeles as support for like-minded groups such as The Body and Wreck and Reference. The group has also received critical acclaim from indie outlets such as The Wire, Uncut (magazine) and Vice Magazine.[2][3][4]

In 2015 vinyl reissues of the sold out Chondritic Sound cassette Aghoree and Memory Loss were released in conjunction with Sol Y Nieve Records. Later that year the album No Life To Live was remastered by Today Is the Day's Steve Austin.[5][6]

That year, Gambit and collaborators released I which was engineered and produced by Jack Shirley which was a departure from more noise oriented releases. In the summer of 2016 the project recorded the follow up II at Machines With Magnets with members of Caïna and Ævangelist.[7][8][9]

Following up, the group worked with Kurt Ballou on III;[10] which garnered a legacy partnership with, Prophecy Productions[11][12][13]and embarked on a string of festival appearances including Austin Terror Fest,[14] Damnation Festival,[15] Prophecy Fest NYC,[16] Days Of Darkness (USA),[17] Steel Warriors Rebellion (PT) and two sets at a sold out Roadburn Festival.[18][19]

Musical style[edit]

The group is known for working within all genres, collaborating with rappers such as Slug Christ and King Yosef, pop singers such as Ciscandra Nostalgia, conceptual artists such as Trevor Brolin[20] and metal bands such as Gnaw Their Tongues,[21] Black Leather Jesus, Water Torture and Dragged Into Sunlight.[9]
