Crying Steel is an Italian heavy metal band formed in Bologna, Italy in 1982.[1]. They have released four regular studio albums, one EP, one compilation album and one DVD.
History
Crying Steel was formed in Bologna, Italy in the spring of 1982, following the disbanding of hard rock group Wurdalak. The founding members of Crying Steel were Alberto Simonini (guitar) and Angelo Franchini (bass), joined by Luca Bonzagni (vocals) and in 1983, after several line-up changes, Luca Ferri (drums) and Franco Nipoti (guitar).[2]
After their first demo was released, the group was noticed by Beppe Riva of Rockerilla who included them in the "Heavy Metal Eruption compilation" (Metal Eye , 1983) together with Death SS, Strana Officina, Rollerball, Steel Crown, Elektra Drive, Revenge, Shyning Blade, Ransackers.[3]
Following the release of the self-titled EP Crying Steel in 1985, the group intensified its live activity playing all over Italy: in particular, the performance at the Heavy Metal Festival in Bologna in June 1986 with Motörhead and Twisted Sister[4].
In 1987, Crying Steel released its debut studio album, On The Prowl[5]. Following the release, the band performed in various locations, including a tour in Russia in 1990.
In 2003, the band reunited and returned to release new music and touring. In 2014, Crying Steel represented Italy at the 25th anniversary of Waken Open Air[6][7] and in 2015 the band participated in the Greek Metal Rites festival in Athens with the Americans Jag Panzer[8]. In the same year, Crying Steel supported ex-Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley in Cremona, Italy[9].
In 2018, the album "Stay Steel" was released, which features English rock singer Tony Mills on vocals. The album was released on German record label Pride & Joy Music[10][11][12]
In 2022, the band's founding member and longtime bassist, Angelo Franchini, along with guitarist JJ Frati, left the band.[13] Paolo Nocchi (guitar) and Marco Zirondelli (bass) replaced them. During the same year, the band announced that they had signed to Italian heavy metal record label Underground Symphony Records for the release of their fifth studio album.[14] Fabio Lione of Angra, and previously of Rhapsody of Fire, will be a special guest on the album performing on vocals on the bonus track "No One’s Crying”.[15]
