Cubbit
Cubbit is a tech startup offering internet services. Today, the focus of the company is on personal cloud storage solutions. Originally founded as a distributed cloud network in 2016, in 2018 the company launched its first B2C product. The 2020 was the year of the Cubbit for Teams, the distributed cloud storage service tailored for businesses and workteams.
After having spent its first years on crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo and Kickstarter, Cubbit established its own e-commerce in the summer of 2020.
Technology
Cubbit efforts are oriented to create a private, secure and sustainable cloud service. The logic behind the encryption system that ensures privacy is called zero-knowledge proof, that is "a mathematical tool used to verify things without sharing or revealing underlying data".[1].
Each file stored on the Cubbit network is encrypted with AES-256 encryption at the moment of the upload and then split into dozens of redundant chunks and spread across the network via end-to-end encrypted channels. Only the owner of the file, namely the user, has the key to ask the managing Artificial Intelligence to recall all the chunks and re-assemble them into an accessible file [2]. In 2019, also Forbes has recognized Cubbit's commitment to create a private online environment for the users [3].
The major structural difference with respect to the traditional way of storing files on the cloud is that Cubbit’s distributed architecture technology means that it does not require proprietary data centers to run, which in turn has major implications also on its environmental impact [4] .
History
Cubbit was founded in July 2016 in Bologna, Italy by Alessandro Cillario, Marco Moschettini, Stefano Onofri and Lorenzo Posani. The founders like to joke about the birth of Cubbit, as they reported to famous Italian newspaper La Repubblica: "We did not started from a garage as they do in Silicon Valley. For us, it all begun from an Air BnB apartment that we used to work as well as to bootstrap the initial managerial costs of the project" [5]
In December 2017 Cubbit had won the Italian National Prize for Innovation, the most prestigious Italian award for tech startups [6]. In 2016 the company won the Myllennium award and went to Boston to work with leaders in the field of ‘disruptive innovation’. The first alpha test was launched and the first Cubbit tech was officially launched thanks to 50 Raspberry Pi 3s in Italy. In December of 2017, the first official Alpha test of Cubbit was performed at the European MakerFaire in Rome and the company won the Maker of Merit award [7]. Following on from this, in April 2018, as one of the most popular Italian newspapers Il Sole 24 Ore reported [8], Cubbit convinced Bruxelles and won the Horizon2020 award from the European Union. In 2018 Cubbit was selected as a cutting edge cybersecurity technology by Techstars and presented its ambitious project to the Barclays Accelerator powered by Techstars in Tel Aviv [9]. In August 2018 the idea of the ‘plug&cloud’ was born and in turn the B2C product: Cubbit Cells. In October 2018 the company launched its Kickstarter campaign and arrived in the top 1% of campaigns ever - raising over $400k. In April 2019 the Indiegogo page was launched and in November 2019 the first Cubbit cells were shipped. In 2020 the company delivered its B2B service, Cubbit for Teams. The company is currently based between Bologna and Tel Aviv.

Cubbit has won awards from Mastercard, Tim and the European Commission.
