The Cuchivilo' or Cuchivilu (from the Castilian dialectal cuchi: pig and from the mapudungun filu: snake), is a fantastic aquatic animal from Chiloe mythology. It is attributed the damage that occurs in the fishing pens (a traditional method of fishing in Chiloé, abandoned in the 1980s due to regulations).

Description[edit]

The knife is a creature the size of a sea lion that looks like the fusion between a pig and a snake, since the upper part, head and front legs are those of a pig, and the back is that of a snake or sea serpent. .

Legend[edit]

According to the legend, the Cuchivilos would inhabit the bottom of the sea, in shallow areas and close to the shores of the islands of the interior sea of Chiloé. They also tend to go swimming in estuaries, lagoons or swamps; This is why you have to be careful when bathing in these places, since if someone bathes in the same waters where this being was, in a short time their body would be covered with grains or scabies. It is also dangerous to listen to it, since its growl is similar to that of a pig and announces that the person who listens to it will have a short life.

Like pigs, this creature likes to roll in mud, and is believed to be always hungry. Its favorite food is shellfish and fish and for this reason it is introduced into fishing pens. In addition to eating and destroying the fish caught in the corral, destroy the building and sickle in the sand in the same way that a normal pig would on the ground. However, the main problem with the knife's visit to the pen is not the destruction, but after the attack, the pen is cursed and a single fish will never be caught in it again. To remove the curse, a magical ceremony known as cheputo or threputo must be performed; in which people must hit the edges of the corral with laurel branches smoked with "mapucho" (chilote tobacco).
