Cupiosexual, also known as kalosexual, is a sexual orientation on the asexual spectrum defined as when someone feels no sexual attraction but still desires a sexual relationship.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Etymology and history

The prefix cupio- is Latin for wish/long/be eager for.[7] The term was coined as kalosexual along with the aromantic equivalent of kalosromantic (now cupioromantic) on Tumblr by the user acelyssie.[8] The flag was created in July 2015.[2]

Research

According to certified sex therapist, Dr. Bailey Hanek, “Cupiosexual is a microlabel within the asexual spectrum. Those who identify as cupiosexual do not experience sexual attraction, but desire a sexual relationship. People who are cupiosexual may be desirous of sex for the pleasurable sensation”[3] According to sex educator, Aubri Lancaster, "One reason an asexual person may want to have sex is to relieve sexual tension. In fact, someone can be asexual and actually have a high libido". According to a 2019 Asexual Community Survey Summary Report, about 9% of asexual people are sex-favorable.[9]
