Curio is a narrated journalism mobile app and website with articles from more than 30 world-renowned publications. It was founded in 2017 by Govind Balakrishnan and Srikant Chakravarti and has content partnerships with The Atlantic, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Guardian, among other publications.

History

The company was founded in 2017 by Govind Balakrishnan and Srikant Chakravarti. While leading strategy for BBC News, Govind noticed high-quality journalism and in-depth features getting buried under the crush of clickbait and breaking news.

Govind decided to co-found Curio with Srikant Chakravarti, who had recently quit his legal career and was exploring the start-up world, exploring mobile technologies as a way to augment everyday experiences.

Both knew that reams of intelligent content already existed and that people were seeking smarter, screen-free ways to spend their time. They realized that there was an opportunity to build a platform designed purely for audio journalism.

In 2019, Curio had its public launch. Curio was highlighted in the Apple Keynote and awarded Google App of the Year. Curio also closed a £11 million funding round[1], securing backing from Earlybird, with participation from Molten Ventures, formerly known as Draper Esprit, Cherry Ventures, Horizons Ventures, 500 Global and other private angel investors.

Since then, it has been downloaded in 241 countries, with over 38 million minutes of audio played.

In May 2023, Curio developed Rio[4], an AI that generates trustworthy, fact-checked information from the publications available on Curio.
