Curology, Inc. is an American telehealth brand of custom skin care products, prescription acne medications, and anti-aging medications. The company was founded in 2014 and has headquarters in San Francisco, California.

History[edit]

Originally launched under the name PocketDerm,[1] the company was founded in 2014 by dermatologist Dr. David Lortscher, his brother Glenn Lortscher, and his mother, dermatologist Dr. Nancy Satur, along with Kris Fredrickson. While practicing in New Mexico, David Lortscher noticed that due to high prices and geographical location, many of his patients were unable to access effective prescription acne treatment.[2] In response, Dr. Lortscher partnered with Dr. Satur to create a digital platform for consultations and product delivery.[3]

In September 2015, the company rebranded under the name Curology. In August 2016, it received $15 million Series B financing from AVP, Forerunner Venture, and ACME Capital (previously Sherpa Capital).[4][5]

Company[edit]

Curology operates under a direct-to-consumer subscription-based business model.[6][7] New members first complete a survey regarding their skin concerns and medical history and provide photos of their skin.[8] This information is reviewed by a licensed medical provider, who prescribes a custom compound formula if appropriate, and may also conduct video or phone consultations in certain states.[9] The custom formulas address concerns such as acne, skin texture and firmness, clogged pores, dark spots, and mature and aging skin.[10] Members can choose to receive products monthly or bimonthly by mail.

Curology subscriptions are currently available to residents over the age of 13 in 46 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. As of July 2020, subscriptions are not available in Arkansas, Indiana, Mississippi, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and has an office in San Diego, California, as well as a partner pharmacy, Skin Specialty Solutions, located in Fenton, Missouri.

Products[edit]

As of July 2020, Curology’s subscription service offers six products, including both prescription and non-prescription products: a custom prescription formula,[11] a cleanser, two types of moisturizer, a salicylic acid acne body wash, and a hydrocolloid bandage.
