Cuza Hotta was a Romanian diplomat of Aromanian origin. At the end of the 1940s, Hotta was investigated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which considered him a communist and a fighter for a Vlach state in the Balkans.
Biography
Cuza Hotta was born in Macedonia but moved to Romania where, according to a CIA source, he became a member of the Iron Guard death squads. He was an active propagandist of the idea for an autonomous Aromanian state in Greece.
During the Second World War, Hotta served as a press attaché of the Romanian legation in Athens. According to a CIA report, he was sent to Greece by the Germans as an agent provocateur. Greek authorities wanted to deport him back to Romania but the Germans did not allow that.
After the liberation of Greece, Hotta was deported to Istanbul, Turkey, in early 1945. According to the CIA report, he was in contact with Russians who requested that he return to Bucharest in order to help in organizing a Romanian bloc of Aromanians who would work on incorporating the Aromanians in the Balkan Federation concept.[1]
