History And Past Projects
The Oncourse project[2], now known as Sakai, is the first learning management system invented at the CyberLab, starting in 1997–1999. Indiana University used this learning management system for more than ten years. In 2005 IU retired the Oncourse platform and moved to a commercially viable alternative.
ANGEL Learning was created after Oncourse[3] under the joint effort of CyberLab and ANGEL Learning Inc. In 2009 Blackboard Inc. purchased ANGEL Learning for about $95 million.[4] A few of the proceeds were directed to the construction of the CyberLab building, also know as the Science and Engineering Laboratory Building on Indiana University - Purdue University campus.
The third project conducted at the CyberLab was Epsilen. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Epsilen then merged into The New York Times as a content management system[5]. The Times advanced their relationships with colleges and universities across the world, allowing The Times Knowledge Network to bring a more progressive dimension to the faculty/student dialogue.[6] In 2012, ConnectEDU announced the acquisition of Epsilen, while at the time was hosting around 600 institutions worldwide. By linking the two educational software, ConnectEDU increased by 20 million newly registered users due to Epsilen.[7]
Current Project
CyberLab's current project, CourseNetworking[8], began its production in the year 2011 with seed funding from Indiana University and Dr. Jafari. CourseNetworking is seen as a next-generation learning environment, which functions as an academic social network.[9] The CN offers features such as Anar Seeds (Anar Reward System), Calendar, Chat, ClassCast, CN Channel, Conexus, Courses, etc. Within the CN, the most commonly used tools are the Task, Post, and Poll operations that make it easy for students to communicate with each other worldwide.
