Czarina (ship)
Background
The SS Czarina was a cargo vessel which weighed 1,045 tons and was 216 feet long [1], it is known for its wreckage in Coos Bay, Oregon. It was a small vessel with a crew of 24, captained by Charles J. Duggan.
Incident
On January 12th, 1910, the SS Czarina would depart from Coos Bay with an estimated $20,000 in cargo. Just minutes later, a heavy storm would hit Coos Bay and the Czarina on its departure, the storm had greatly damaged both lifeboats and the ship itself, after the storm seemed to calm the crew would drop anchor, yet this left the ship in a vulnerable position as the storm hit once again, in response the crew attempted to release the anchor, which failed, at the same time rescue efforts were under way. Yet, these also failed. The crew, upon realizing the situation with the anchor was hopeless, would cling to the rigging as the ship continued to face the strong gale; 23 men out of its 24-man crew would die in the incident. In contrast, the 1 sole survivor would end up swimming to shore.
